High in the East Fjords, the air felt thinner — filled with mist, silence, and the faint scent of melting snow. The path climbed steeply above the fjord until the world narrowed to stone, sky, and breath.

I created this piece during one of my long stays in Iceland, while living in the East Fjords. Mjóifjörður is one of the island’s most remote places — reached only by a winding gravel road in summer, or by boat when winter closes the way. Up there, solitude isn’t absence. It’s presence, distilled to its purest form.

This artwork — later featured on the cover of Í boði náttúrunnar, one of Iceland’s leading magazines — is about that feeling: of standing small against the mountains, surrounded by silence so complete it begins to speak.

True collectibility lies in the details you don’t see right away: the archival inks, the joinery of the frame. These subtleties ensure that each piece will remain as vivid and stable as the day it was made. Time only deepens its presence.

How I created this artwork

The morning began in silence — the kind that feels alive, humming faintly beneath the surface of the world. Mist clung to the mountains of the East Fjords, blurring their ridgelines into soft gray shapes. I set out early, my boots sinking into damp moss, the only sound the slow rhythm of my steps.

The road to Mjóifjörður is narrow and steep, curling between cliffs and streams before finally descending toward the sea. It’s one of Iceland’s most remote places — a single valley at the end of a long gravel road, cut off completely in winter except by boat. When I reached the ridge that morning, the wind carried the faint scent of melting snow and salt from the fjord below.

I stood there for a long time, surrounded by nothing but light, distance, and the quiet pulse of the land. The world felt reduced to essentials — rock, air, and the small yellow figure of a hiker moving across the landscape. That moment wasn’t about adventure; it was about surrender — to stillness, to vastness, to the strange peace that comes when you feel both infinite and small.

When I pressed the shutter, I knew this image was different. It carried something of that silence with it. Months later, seeing it on the cover of Í boði náttúrunnar, one of Iceland’s leading magazines, felt deeply moving — as though the solitude I had found in that remote fjord had quietly made its way into the wider world.
