The wind in Gásadalur, Faroe Islands, carries a sound you don’t forget — a low hum of the ocean mixed with the whisper of rain sweeping across the grass. I remember standing there, facing the mountain, feeling the drizzle on my cheeks and the cold seeping through my gloves. The village lay still beneath the cliffs, a scattering of houses dwarfed by the vastness around them.

The light was fleeting — clouds raced across the sky, shadows shifting like waves over the land. And yet, in that brief stillness between gusts, everything felt perfectly balanced: the quiet resilience of the people who live here, the raw beauty of the Faroe Islands, and the solitude that seems to settle into your bones.

I pressed the shutter just as a break of light touched the village, illuminating it for only a heartbeat before vanishing again. That moment has stayed with me — a reminder of how fragile and enduring beauty can be in a place where nature always leads.

Over the years, I’ve learned that light in the North doesn’t reveal; it transforms. Each artwork is a record of that transformation — of land into memory, of silence into presence. Some of these moments became part of Assouline’s publications; others now rest in homes across five continents.

How I created this artwork

The air in the Faroe Islands felt charged — heavy with salt, rain, and something older than time. I had long dreamed of photographing this remote archipelago, where the mountains fall straight into the sea and villages cling to the land like memories that refuse to fade.

When I arrived in Gásadalur, the clouds were moving fast, wrapping the cliffs in mist and letting slivers of light break through for only seconds at a time. The wind carried the scent of wet grass and distant salt spray, and the hum of the ocean echoed faintly below. I stood there for a long while, watching the light shift across the mountain’s face — soft one moment, sharp the next — until the village glowed in a fleeting band of sun.

It struck me how small and self-contained life can be in places like this. A handful of homes, a winding path, a waterfall dropping into the sea. And yet, everything here felt vast — as if silence itself had weight.

I pressed the shutter when the light touched the roofs and the mountain behind them darkened, creating a contrast that felt almost like breath — light and shadow inhaling and exhaling together.

That evening, as the storm returned and the first drops hit my lens, I realized that photographing the Faroe Islands isn’t about chasing beauty. It’s about learning to stand still in its presence — to let it move through you before it disappears again into the mist.
