At the far end of the fjord of Seyðisfjörður, where the mountains meet the sea, lies the farm of Skálanes — a place where silence feels almost sacred. I spent a year and a half living in the East Fjords, and one morning, while visiting a friend’s aunt who tended the land there, I met this young foal.

The air was still, heavy with salt and wild grass. Mist drifted in from the fjord, and the foal — pale, curious, and shimmering in the soft light — stood watching me with quiet confidence. His name was Bjarmi, meaning glow.

Each artwork preserves that fleeting calm; a portrait of Iceland’s gentleness, captured at the edge of the world.

The way something is crafted determines how it’s felt. Each piece is crafted slowly on heavyweight cotton paper, so the image breathes, like the still air before a storm. It’s not production; it’s translation — turning a fleeting moment into something permanent.

How I created this artwork

There’s a place at the very end of Seyðisfjörður where the road simply stops. From there, the valley narrows into cliffs and sea, and all that remains is the sound of wind moving through grass and the slow rhythm of waves against rock. That’s where Skálanes lies — a solitary farm at the edge of the fjord, surrounded by eider nests, driftwood, and silence so deep it feels alive.

I had been living in the East Fjords for over a year when I first visited — a trip to see the aunt of a friend, whose family had tended the land there for generations. She welcomed me with coffee and thick slices of freshly baked bread, and as we sat by the window, the fog began to lift from the water below, revealing the pale outline of the mountains.

When I stepped outside, the air smelled of seaweed and wet earth. A small herd of Icelandic horses grazed near the shore, their coats shimmering in the damp light. Among them stood a young foal — slender, pale, and impossibly calm. He watched me with the steady gaze of something both new and ancient.

I moved slowly, not wanting to break the spell. The only sounds were the distant call of seabirds and the soft crackle of grass beneath my boots. When I raised the camera, the foal tilted his head slightly, as if curious about the quiet stranger standing before him. In that instant, the light caught the curls along his mane — a golden shimmer, faint but unmistakable.

His name was Bjarmi — glow.

That photograph became a memory of stillness; of how light feels when it returns after days of fog, and how life unfolds gently even in the loneliest corners of the world.

Whenever I look at “Bjarmi of Skálanes”, I remember that day at the edge of the fjord: the calm, the mist, the quiet companionship of a creature unafraid of silence. It’s a reminder that beauty often appears when the world stands completely still.
