He stood there in the mist, calm and steady, his coat glistening with rain. In Iceland, horses seem to carry the landscape within them — its strength, its solitude, its quiet dignity. Blær of Húsey was no different.

I met him while staying on a remote farm by a black sand beach in northeast Iceland, where mountains met the sea and seals drifted like shadows along the shore. We spent days riding through the wind and silence, across dark sands and shallow rivers, until I no longer knew where the land ended and the sea began.

There was a gentleness to him — curious, grounded, almost knowing. When I lifted my camera, he stood still, as if understanding that this moment would last.

For me, every piece begins in silence; in the way light moves across a landscape, or the quiet trust of a creature like Blær. From that stillness comes the craft: the patience, precision, and care that give the moment its lasting form.

My work — featured in Assouline’s Iceland Epic and now collected in more than 2,000 homes — is built around such encounters: fleeting, wordless connections between place, light, and living soul.

How I created this artwork

I met Blær during one of my long stays in Iceland, while visiting a remote farm called Húsey — where the mountains meet a black sand beach and the sea stretches endlessly into the mist. The days there unfolded slowly, marked by the cry of seabirds and the sound of hooves echoing through the valley.

Blær was gentle but strong, with that unmistakable calm you find only in Icelandic horses — creatures shaped by wind, solitude, and centuries of endurance. On quiet mornings, I would ride him across the dark beach, the waves hissing softly at his hooves, seals watching from the water like silent witnesses. There was a peace in those rides that felt older than words, as if the land itself was breathing through him.

We moved together through fog and drizzle, across shallow rivers and open plains, and I began to understand what makes Icelandic horses unlike any others. They carry stillness within them — the kind that doesn’t ask to be noticed, only felt.

When I took this photograph, Blær stood before me in the rain, steady and unhurried, his mane damp, his eyes clear. It wasn’t a portrait I planned — it was simply a moment shared between two beings who had learned to listen to the same silence.

Even now, when I look at this image, I can hear the rhythm of his steps on the wet sand and the quiet pulse of the North that guided us both.
