The coastline stretched endlessly beneath a heavy northern sky. A few houses stood scattered across the golden fields — the red one glowing softly, a quiet accent of life against the muted landscape. Beyond them, the sea shimmered with restraint, as if it too was holding its breath.

I found Ásgarður while traveling through the Westfjords in late September, during one of my long stays in Iceland. The air was cool and still, carrying the scent of salt and grass, and time seemed to slow to match the rhythm of the waves. The solitude here wasn’t emptiness — it was presence, deep and grounding.

This piece is a reflection of that calm — where land, sea, and sky meet in quiet conversation, and the traces of human life feel humble beside the vastness of nature.

I choose materials that age with grace — wood that deepens in tone, cotton paper that holds light without fading. These are the quiet guarantees of longevity. My goal is simple: that each piece will one day feel like it has always belonged wherever it is.

In Iceland, the smallest shift of light can change everything — the mountain, the sea, the way you feel inside your own skin. My art comes from those transformations. Featured in Assouline’s Iceland Epic and collected on five continents, these works are fragments of that evolving calm.

How I created this artwork

I remember arriving in Ásgarður on a calm, overcast morning. The road wound gently along the coast, with cliffs on one side and the vast North Atlantic on the other. The light was soft — one of those quiet Icelandic days when the clouds hang low, and every color feels muted yet alive.

The small settlement appeared almost unexpectedly, its houses scattered near the shoreline as if placed there by the wind. The red cabin drew my eye first, standing out against the subdued palette of earth and sea. There was something deeply human about it — modest, self-contained, and completely at peace with its surroundings.

I stood there for a long time before creating the photograph, listening to the distant waves and the cry of seabirds drifting across the bay. The air smelled faintly of salt and wet grass. It felt as though time had slowed, allowing me to see the landscape not just as scenery, but as a living presence — shaped by wind, light, and solitude.

That’s what the Westfjords always give me: a sense of stillness that feels almost sacred. When I pressed the shutter, I wanted to capture that feeling — not the drama of the place, but its quiet grace.
