The air in the Faroe Islands felt different — saltier, sharper, almost electric with stillness. I remember the narrow road winding through the mountains, the light breaking and fading with every turn, and then suddenly — Saksun.

Mist hung low over the valley, softening the edges of the cliffs and dulling every sound but the rush of falling water. The few farmhouses perched above the cascade felt almost weightless, their red roofs glowing faintly against the muted greens of the Faroe Islands. And silence so complete it felt like a living thing.

It was a fleeting moment, but one that carried the same mystery I’ve always found in Iceland: solitude, light, and the feeling that the earth itself was breathing.

How I created this artwork

I had been driving since dawn, the road curling through the mountains like a ribbon of grey, the world alternating between shadow and sudden light. Every turn revealed something unexpected — cliffs dissolving into mist, waterfalls dropping into hidden valleys, sheep grazing on impossible slopes.

When I reached Saksun, the day felt suspended. The wind had died, and the sky hung heavy with cloud. I could hear only the sound of water spilling from the cliffs and a few distant seabirds cutting through the silence. The village looked untouched by time — a scattering of red-roofed houses clinging to the hillside above a silver ribbon of river.

I stood there for a long while before lifting the camera. The light was soft, almost weightless, and everything — the mountains, the water, the air — felt as though it belonged to a single breath. When I pressed the shutter, I wasn’t trying to capture a scene. I was trying to hold a feeling — that rare moment when solitude turns into peace.

Even now, years later, I can still hear that silence when I look at the photograph. It reminds me why I keep returning north — not to chase grand vistas, but to listen for the spaces between them.
