The morning was windless — the fjord of Seyðisfjörður so still it felt like glass. A single fishing boat rested by the pier, its dark hull mirrored perfectly in the cold water, framed by snow-dusted mountains. Everything was silent except for the soft creak of rope against wood.

For over a decade, I’ve returned to Iceland’s quietest places, waiting for moments like this — when time seems to stop and the world holds its breath.

When I hold a finished piece in my hands, I want it to feel inevitable, as if it has always existed this way. Every decision, from paper to frame, is made so the artwork feels calm and whole. Because the right materials don’t just carry an image; they carry its emotion.

I’ve always been drawn to the edge of things — where the land meets the sea, where the day fades into mist. My work, featured in Assouline’s Iceland Epic and collected by art lovers on five continents, is my way of holding on to those fragile moments before they vanish.

How I created this artwork

It was November, the kind of morning when winter begins to take hold of the fjords. The air was sharp but not harsh, and the mountains wore a new layer of snow so pale it blended almost completely into the sky. The town of Seyðisfjörður was still asleep — not a sound but the occasional crack of ice forming at the water’s edge.

I walked along the shoreline, breath rising in small clouds, following the curve of the fjord until I saw it: a lone fishing boat moored at the pier. Its wooden hull was darkened by years of salt and sea, its deck a quiet echo of the white slopes behind it. There was a perfect balance to it — stillness meeting strength.

The water was so calm that it became impossible to tell where reflection ended and reality began. I stood there for a long while, not wanting to disturb the silence. At that moment, it felt as if the whole world had exhaled.

I’ve spent months living in the East Fjords, returning to this place again and again through every season. Yet, scenes like this — when the light softens and everything slows — always feel like the first time.

“Still Waters of Seyðisfjörður” carries that quiet breath of winter: the hush before the day begins, the fragile peace between motion and rest. It’s a reminder that beauty doesn’t always ask to be found — sometimes, it simply waits, patient and unwavering.
