It was in Borgarfjörður eystri, in Iceland’s remote East Fjords, that I first stood face to face with this puffin — calm, curious, and almost motionless in the wind. The cliffs fell away to the sea below, the air filled with the scent of salt and grass, and for a few quiet moments, the world felt smaller, simpler, beautifully still.

There was something deeply human in its stillness — a quiet confidence, a kind of peace that belongs only to creatures perfectly at home in their world. I remember thinking how rare it is, to witness calm like that — and how much it teaches you, without a word.

I’ve spent over a decade tracing Iceland’s wild places, but this encounter remains one of the most tender — a fleeting meeting between two wanderers on the edge of the sea.

How I created this artwork

I still remember the road that led me there — narrow, winding along the edge of the fjord, the sea shimmering to my left and snow-streaked mountains rising to my right. Borgarfjörður Eystri felt like the end of the world, the kind of place where silence has its own sound.

When I climbed the small grassy hill above the harbor, I froze in disbelief. The slope was alive — hundreds of puffins, standing like tiny sentinels, each one perfectly still except for the flicker of wind in their feathers. The air smelled of salt and moss. The only sounds were the low murmur of the sea below and the faint rustle of wings.

I sat down on the grass, careful not to move too suddenly. The puffins didn’t mind my presence; they watched me with the same quiet curiosity I felt toward them. Their colors — that deep black, the soft white chest, and the bright orange beak — seemed to glow against the muted tones of Iceland’s spring.

One of them, standing slightly apart from the rest, caught my attention. It looked out toward the open water, its posture calm and self-contained, as if lost in thought. That was the moment I pressed the shutter.

It wasn’t just about capturing a bird; it was about capturing a feeling — that rare balance of life and silence, presence and peace. I’ve seen many wild places since then, but that hillside in the East Fjords remains one of the gentlest, most human moments I’ve ever experienced in nature.
