Mist hung low over the cliffs of Snæfellsnes Peninsula when I reached Lóndrangar. The air was heavy with salt and wind, and the ocean moved with that slow, deliberate rhythm that always precedes a storm. Two basalt towers rose from the sea like ancient sentinels — weathered, patient, unshaken by time.

I stood there for a long while, listening to the waves crash against the black rock, feeling the ground tremble beneath me. The scale was impossible to grasp. It felt less like a landscape, more like an encounter.

How I created this artwork

The road around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula felt endless that morning — a ribbon of gravel cutting through wind-swept fields and lava plains. I had been driving for hours, with the sea flashing in and out of view, the horizon wrapped in mist. Iceland can feel like that sometimes — as if it’s holding its breath, waiting to show you something.

When I reached Lóndrangar, the light had turned silver and the air was thick with salt. The wind carried a low hum from the waves below. Not loud, but deep, as though the ocean was speaking from far away. Two basalt towers rose from the shoreline, dark and jagged, like the remnants of some ancient fortress.

I set up my tripod near the edge of the cliff. The ground trembled slightly each time a wave collided with the rocks. Gulls wheeled and cried in the wind, their voices lost against the sea’s rhythm. It wasn’t just a view. It was a confrontation with something vast and indifferent, something older than words.

As I composed the frame, I realized I wasn’t photographing a landscape. I was witnessing endurance — the strength of what stays while everything else moves on.
