Deep in the valley beneath the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, steam rose from the warm water as the night hung in pale Arctic light. The air was silent except for the trickle of distant waterfalls and the faint echo of wind against the cliffs.

I had been living nearby for months, often coming here alone in the middle of the night. Around 2 a.m., the world felt suspended — no darkness, no sound, only the quiet warmth of the pool and the vastness of the mountains.

There’s something haunting about Seljavallalaug — this forgotten pool built into the raw landscape, holding both history and stillness. It’s a place that feels untouched by time, where the boundary between the human and the natural fades.

How I created this artwork

For seven months, I lived on a small farm at the foot of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano — the one that stopped air traffic across Europe in 2010. Just a few kilometers away, hidden in a narrow valley, lies Seljavallalaug — a forgotten swimming pool built into the mountainside.

Most visitors came during the day, when the light was harsh and the place filled with footsteps and voices. But I preferred the nights. Iceland sits so close to the Arctic Circle that in midsummer it never truly gets dark — only softer, quieter, pale.

It was around 2 a.m., when the valley lay empty and the mist hung low over the slopes. The air smelled of wet earth and moss, and the water was warm against the cold mountain wind. It was one of those rare Icelandic moments when everything — the sound of the stream, the slow drifting fog, the faint reflections on the pool — felt perfectly balanced.

I remember standing there for a long time before even reaching for the camera. The silence was almost hypnotic, broken only by the faint rush of water flowing down from the glacier. When I finally pressed the shutter, it wasn’t just to capture the view — it was to hold onto that stillness, that feeling of being completely alone yet entirely connected to the land around me.

To me, Seljavallalaug is more than a place. It’s a symbol of what I love most about Iceland — its mix of human presence and vast, untamed nature. The warmth of the water, the cold of the air, the solitude, the serenity — all coexisting in quiet harmony.
