Evening settled softly over Seyðisfjörður, in the remote East Fjords of Iceland. Fresh snow muffled every sound, and the air glowed with that faint blue light that lingers just before nightfall. The church stood quietly at the heart of it all — its pale façade mirroring the sky, its warmth barely touched by the cold.

There was something deeply human in that stillness. As if the whole town was holding its breath, suspended between day and night, presence and memory. Moments like this remind me why I return to the North again and again. To feel the beauty that asks for silence, not words.

For over a decade, I’ve returned to Iceland’s quietest corners, drawn to moments like this — where colour becomes emotion, and silence feels alive.

I believe in creating pieces meant to last, not just in their materials, but in the feelings they carry. Crafted on museum-grade Hahnemühle Photo Rag and framed in solid wood with obsessive attention to detail in London, each work becomes a quiet heirloom of calm and connection.

All artworks are created by me — Adam Biernat, an award-winning fine art photographer. I’ve spent the last decade chasing stillness across Iceland’s most remote corners.

How I created this artwork

It was my last evening in Seyðisfjörður. The ferry to Denmark would leave in a few hours, but I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. The town was wrapped in fresh snow — soft, weightless, untouched. I wandered through the empty streets, my footsteps barely audible under the blanket of white.

The air was still, almost unreal in its quiet. Streetlights glowed faintly through the mist, painting the snow in warm halos. And there it was — the Blue Church, standing in the heart of the town like a dream you don’t want to wake from. Its pale façade seemed to echo the color of the sky, the same delicate blue that deepens just before night takes hold.

For a long moment, I just stood there — watching the lights shimmer against the falling snow, feeling the strange calm that comes when time slows down. There was no sound but the quiet hum of the lamps and the rhythm of my breath. Iceland has a way of doing that; of reminding you how vast the world is, and how rare stillness can be.

I pressed the shutter once, knowing I didn’t need another frame. The moment had already etched itself into me.

Over the years, I’ve returned to Seyðisfjörður many times, and it always feels the same — like stepping into a place that exists between reality and memory. Maybe that’s why I love it so deeply. Some places you photograph. Others, you feel.
