The air in Kerlingarfjöll was thick with the scent of sulfur and rain — a place where the earth still breathes fire beneath its skin. I remember standing there, surrounded by colours that seemed impossible: rust-red hills streaked with green moss, rivers of glacial blue cutting through volcanic stone, snow clinging stubbornly to the ridges.

Everywhere I looked, the land was alive — steaming, shifting, whispering in its own language. It felt like witnessing the planet in its rawest form, untouched and eternal. Collectors often tell me that pieces like this bring them a sense of grounding.

I often think of my work as a collaboration between nature, time, and craft. Nature offers the raw beauty, time teaches patience, and craftsmanship gives it permanence. The harmony between them is what turns a photograph into something that can be lived with, generation after generation.

What I photograph isn’t scenery — it’s the silence between moments, the breath that lingers after the wind fades. Iceland taught me to recognize that. My work, featured in Assouline’s Iceland Epic and collected around the world, carries those fleeting silences forward.

How I created this artwork

It was July, but the wind in the Highlands cut like autumn. The road to Kerlingarfjöll had felt endless — a ribbon of gravel threading through desert plains, steam rising from cracks in the earth. By the time I arrived, clouds had swallowed the sky, and the whole landscape seemed to vibrate with heat and cold at once.

Kerlingarfjöll is one of those places where you feel the planet breathing. The ground itself is alive — sulfur hissing through vents, rivers carving new paths, snow melting into rivulets that vanish beneath the rock. I remember the smell of minerals, the low roar of unseen water, and the colours — iron reds, ochres, moss greens — like the palette of some ancient painter working in fire and ice.

I set up my camera on a ridge where a stream fell in a silver thread through the canyon below. For a while, I forgot the cold entirely. The wind moved the steam like a living veil, and with every shift, the scene became something new — a landscape in motion, revealing and hiding itself in the same breath.

When I finally pressed the shutter, I felt a strange calm — as if I had been allowed a glimpse into the earth’s own memory. Kerlingarfjöll isn’t just a place of color; it’s a reminder that the world is still being made, moment by moment, beneath our feet.
