Mist hung in the air that morning, softening the edges of the cliffs as I stood at the rim of Fjaðrárgljúfur. Below me, the river curved through the canyon like a living thread — dark, glimmering, and endlessly patient. 

The walls rose steep and green, their moss shimmering in the damp air, the sound of rushing water echoing through the stillness. It felt like stepping into another world, where time moved slower and the earth seemed to breathe.

How I created this artwork

Fjaðrárgljúfur was one of those places I kept returning to when I lived on a small farm on Iceland’s South Coast. It was only about an hour away, but the drive always felt like a journey to another world — winding through moss-covered lava fields and open plains that seemed to stretch forever.

I often went there on quiet Sunday mornings, when the canyon was empty. The mist would drift low, brushing the cliffs and softening their edges, and the river below would shimmer like liquid glass. I never hurried. I’d walk along the rim, listening to the sound of water moving far beneath me — steady, patient, eternal.

There’s a particular spot where the canyon bends, carving a perfect serpentine path toward the horizon. I waited there for the light to settle — that delicate, silvery light Iceland sometimes gives you for just a few minutes — and when it did, I pressed the shutter. It wasn’t a moment of grandeur, but of quiet clarity.

Later, as I looked at the photograph, I realized it captured exactly what I felt: how alive stillness can be. The greens seem to pulse, the river breathes, and time feels suspended between one heartbeat and the next.

Some collectors tell me this piece helps them slow down — that they find themselves returning to it the way I returned to the canyon. And that, I think, is what art at its best can do: remind us to pause, to look, and to listen.
