The road had been empty for hours when I saw it — a single house beneath a mountain veiled in mist, its red roof glowing faintly through the cold air. The silence was immense, broken only by the wind brushing through dry grass. I stepped out of the car and just stood there, watching.

There was something profoundly human about that house — weathered, solitary, yet utterly unbroken. In that moment, it felt like a portrait of resilience, standing quietly against the vastness that surrounded it.

I create each piece knowing it will become part of someone’s world — a quiet presence in a room, a reflection of memory, a pause in a hurried day. That’s why nothing is left to chance. True craftsmanship is my way of making sure the feeling that moved me endures for the person who lives with it.

Over the years, Iceland has become less of a place to me and more of a feeling — vast, solitary, and alive in its quiet. My photographs, including those in Assouline’s Iceland Epic, are born from that feeling and now live with collectors across five continents.

How I created this artwork

The wind had picked up that afternoon — the kind that seems to come from nowhere, rushing down the valleys and carrying the scent of the sea. I had been driving for hours through the Westfjords, the road curling between mountains and fjords, with not a single car in sight. The landscape felt infinite — rugged, raw, and achingly still.

And then, through the veil of mist, I saw it. A small white house with a red roof, standing alone at the base of the mountain. It looked almost fragile against the vastness, yet there was something steadfast about it — as if it had always been there, quietly enduring every storm that passed through these fjords.

I pulled over and stepped out into the cold. The air was sharp and smelled of wet earth and seaweed. The grass whispered around me, and in the distance, I could hear the faint cry of seabirds. The mountain behind the house was half-hidden in cloud, its slopes painted in soft browns and greys of early autumn. Everything felt suspended — as though time had slowed just long enough to let me see the poetry of this place.

I stood there for a long while before creating the photograph. There was no rush — just a quiet recognition of balance: between strength and solitude, between man and nature. The house, small and weathered, seemed less like a dwelling and more like a witness — a keeper of stories from winters past.

When I pressed the shutter, I wasn’t just documenting a scene; I was honoring a feeling — that fragile, enduring harmony that exists only at the world’s edges.
