In the northern fjord town of Siglufjörður, Iceland, where I once lived by the sea, I came across this old barn one September morning — just after the season’s first snow had dusted the valley. The air smelled of cold earth and hay, and the mountains were silent except for the faint calls of sheep being gathered for réttir, Iceland’s annual round-up.

Weathered by decades of wind and storms, the barn stood proud and unyielding — a quiet witness to time and change. Its worn wood carried a beauty that needed no restoration, only reverence.

I’ve lived and breathed Iceland for over a decade. Not in passing visits, but through months spent in its wilderness, by the fjords and in quiet fishing villages, waiting for moments like this.

I work slowly because the landscapes that move me were shaped slowly. Each artwork is made with the same patience — from the fine cotton fibers of the paper to the solid wood frames built one at a time. Every element serves one purpose: to honor the stillness that inspired it.

How I created this artwork

It was early September in Siglufjörður — that in-between season when autumn brushes the mountains, but winter is already waiting just beyond the peaks. I’d been living there for months, in a small house by the fjord. That morning, I woke to silence and light unlike any other: the first snow of the year had fallen overnight, thin as frost, soft as breath.

I joined a few locals in the valley for réttir, the annual sheep gathering. It’s a tradition that binds this landscape together. Families on horseback, dogs darting between flocks, the echo of voices drifting through the cold air. There’s something deeply human about it, something timeless.

And then I saw it. Standing apart from the commotion, an old barn — half-collapsed, weather-beaten, but still proud. The wood was cracked and grey, its roof half gone, yet it carried the quiet dignity of a place that had survived everything the North could throw at it.

The snow clung to its edges like memory. Behind it, the mountains disappeared into cloud. I set up my tripod in the brittle grass and watched as the wind brushed through the valley, lifting flakes of snow into the air.

When I released the shutter, I wasn’t just photographing a structure. I was capturing a feeling. The quiet endurance of the North. The poetry of decay. The stillness that comes when time seems to stop for a breath.

Even now, when I look at this piece, I can smell the frost and hear the muffled sound of sheep bells far in the distance. Iceland has a way of doing that — reminding you that beauty often hides in the places that stand their ground, quietly, against time.
