In the Faroe Islands, the village of Saksun lay wrapped in cloud that evening. Mist drifted between the cliffs, and from the valley came only the sound of a distant waterfall. At the edge of it all stood the small white church — its turf roof damp with rain, its walls bright against the deep green earth.

I remember how calm it felt there, as if the world had slowed to a breath. The church seemed less built than grown — a quiet shelter against the endless sky.

This piece captures that sense of reverence and solitude; the feeling that time moves differently in places like this. The White Church of Saksun invites stillness, reflection, and quiet wonder.

How I created this artwork

Some places don’t just leave an impression — they take a piece of you with them. Saksun is one of those places for me.

I remember the evening well. I was driving the empty roads of the Faroe Islands, the air crisp with the promise of autumn. The landscape felt untouched, like a world caught between time. Then, I saw it: the White Church of Saksun, standing alone beneath towering cliffs, its grass-covered roof blending into the land itself. A place not just built, but rooted in the earth.

The silence was absolute, broken only by the distant sound of water — a hidden waterfall tumbling down the rock face, a soft whisper of the tide beyond the fjord. I stepped out of the car, camera in hand, and felt something rare: a perfect moment. The church, with its whitewashed walls and simple steeple, looked like it had grown from the earth rather than been built upon it. A place of quiet faith, woven into the fabric of the wild.

As I framed my shot, a low mist curled around the mountains, softening their rugged edges. In that moment, I understood why Saksun had stolen my heart. It’s not just a place — it’s a feeling. One of stillness. Of reverence. Of something ancient lingering in the air.
