Featured in Assouline’s Iceland Epic, this haunting artwork captures the remains of the U.S. Navy’s DC-3 plane scattered across the black sands of Sólheimasandur. I created it during one of my long stays on Iceland’s South Coast — a place I came to know not just through its landscapes, but through its silences.

That morning, the world was swallowed by fog. The air was dense, the horizon erased, and the wreck stood alone — a ghost from another time. I waited until a single figure stepped into the frame, their orange jacket burning like a small flame against the ash-colored desert.

For over a decade, I’ve returned to Iceland’s wildest places, drawn to the poetry that lives in their solitude. The Wreck of Sólheimasandur holds that duality — the human and the inhuman, the ruin and the calm, the beauty that unsettles as much as it soothes.

I choose every element — paper, frame, glazing — with the same care I give to light in the field. Each contributes its quiet role: the cotton paper that breathes with tone, the solid wood that grounds the image, the glazing that reveals rather than reflects. Together, they make something meant to last.

Museum-Level Detail & Depth

Each piece is printed on archival Hahnemühle Photo Rag — a luxurious, thick, 100% cotton matte paper, prized by galleries and collectors for its softly textured surface and museum-level depth.

Combined with archival 12-color Canon Lucia Pro inks, it captures breathtaking sharpness, rich tones, and natural color that brings the scene to life — whether it's a misty Icelandic fjord or a windswept coastal plain.

The result? Museum-level clarity, subtle gradations, and a sense of presence so real you’ll want to step into the frame.

FRAMING GUIDE

Thoughtfully Framed. Beautifully Finished.

Framed in London Studio

Each artwork is professionally framed in London, where the artwork, glazing, and frame are carefully assembled and finished to ensure a refined, gallery-ready presentation.

The frames themselves are crafted in Germany by Nielsen — a renowned European frame producer known for its precision engineering and exceptional build quality.

This combination of German craftsmanship and London-based finishing results in a frame that feels deliberate, balanced, and beautifully executed.

Real Wood. No Imitations.

All frames are made from real wood — never MDF or imitation materials. The result is a frame that feels solid, natural, and timeless, with subtle grain and character that elevates the artwork rather than distracting from it.

The wood used is FSC®-certified, sourced from responsibly managed forests that meet strict environmental and social standards.

Glass & Acrylic — Chosen by Size

To ensure both clarity and durability, glazing is selected based on artwork size:

Small and medium sizes are framed behind high-quality glass, offering crisp clarity and a classic finish.

Larger sizes are framed behind premium framing acrylic — lighter, safer, and better suited for substantial works, while maintaining excellent visual quality.

Clean, Modern Presentation (No Mount)

All artworks are framed without a mount, creating a clean, contemporary look that keeps the focus entirely on the image.

A subtle printed border around the artwork provides visual breathing room and balance, resulting in a presentation that feels intentional, modern, and gallery-inspired.

A classic black frame suits almost any interior, while white or oak frames bring a lighter, more contemporary character to a space.

Ready to Hang

Every framed artwork arrives ready to hang, with secure hanging hardware attached to the back of the frame.

No additional preparation needed — just unpack, hang, and enjoy the artwork in your space.

“The frame quality blew me away! Solid, elegant, and beautifully finished.” – Peter F.

Nordic travel photography print featuring a crashed DC3 plane at Solheimasandur in Iceland

Hi! I'm Adam Biernat,

an award-winning photographer, published in the top Icelandic magazines.

I have been traveling around Iceland since 2014 to capture its serene beauty.

How I created this artwork

It was one of those Icelandic mornings when the horizon disappears. The sky and the earth seemed to merge into a single sheet of white, and even the sound of the sea had faded somewhere behind the fog. I knew the wreck was close — I’d walked that black desert many times before — but it only revealed itself when I was almost upon it, emerging slowly from the haze like a memory.

The DC-3 lies in silence on the sands of Sólheimasandur, its metal skin scarred by nearly five decades of storms. I had visited this place several times, waiting for the right conditions. I didn’t want sunlight or drama — I wanted absence. When the fog finally came, it swallowed the world until nothing remained but the plane, the ash-colored earth, and a single figure in orange standing on the fuselage — a flicker of life in a landscape that felt beyond time.

Everything about that moment was still. The air was heavy, the sand soft underfoot, the light diffused into nothingness. It was both unsettling and serene — beauty stripped down to its bones. I stood there for a long while, listening to the quiet, trying to absorb what it felt like to be somewhere that seemed to exist outside of the living world.

The piece is less about the wreck itself and more about what it evokes — the resilience of what remains, the echo of human presence in a place long reclaimed by nature. For me, it’s a meditation on impermanence and solitude, on the strange peace that can live inside desolation.
