Fresh snow had just fallen over Seyðisfjörður, in the East Fjords of Iceland. The town was hushed, its colours softened, its edges blurred by winter’s breath. By the edge of the fjord stood this old house — weathered, silent, and somehow full of warmth. Its windows caught the faint light, and for a moment, it felt as though time itself had stopped to rest beside it.

I’ve spent years wandering through Iceland’s quiet towns, waiting for scenes like this: where simplicity carries its own poetry, and stillness feels like home.

A photograph begins as light, but it becomes real only when it’s made by hand. The paper’s texture, the grain of the frame, the quiet signature — each adds a human presence. That’s what I want collectors to feel: that another pair of hands cared about this piece before it reached theirs.

The Icelandic light never repeats itself. Every day, every cloud, every silence is different. My work, featured in Assouline’s Iceland Epic and on the covers of Iceland’s leading magazines, is my attempt to preserve those fleeting tones of peace.

How I created this artwork

It was my last morning in Seyðisfjörður. The air was still, the kind of stillness that only comes after fresh snow. Every sound felt softened. Footsteps muted, the fjord hushed beneath a thin veil of mist. I walked through the empty streets one last time, tracing paths I’d walked hundreds of times before, each corner carrying its own quiet memory.

Down by the water, I stopped. The old white house stood there — alone, serene, facing the fjord as if guarding its secrets. Its walls were weathered, yet full of life, and beside it, a few boats rested in the frozen shallows. The sky was pale and endless, the kind of winter light that seems to come from everywhere at once.

I remember thinking how peaceful it felt. Not an ending, but a pause, a quiet goodbye wrapped in calm.

I’d lived in the East Fjords for over a year and a half, just one mountain pass away from here. I knew this landscape in all its moods — the heavy storms, the long quiet days, the glow of the northern light — yet it still managed to surprise me with moments like this.

The house didn’t feel abandoned. It felt remembered; as if it had been waiting for someone to notice it, to see it as it truly was. I stayed there for a long time, watching the faint ripples on the water and the snow gathering on the steps.

This artwork is my way of preserving that moment — the silence, the stillness, and the tenderness of farewell.
